In a memo to top-level executives at Microsoft, Bill Gates said that industry shifts to Internet-based software and services represent a huge “sea change.” An Associated Press article in The Washington Post reported that Gates ordered company leaders to act quickly in order to offer similar services to compete with competitors. Another memo from Ray Ozzie, one of Microsoft’s three chief technical officers, addressed the fact that the company, to this point, was not leading the industry with Internet-based software and services and faces intense competition.
